Welsh team, Cross Keys, to visit Newfoundland

May 25, 2011 - The renowned Welsh Division One rugby club, Cross Keys will arrive in St. John’s on May 28 to play the Swilers Club on Tuesday May 31 and The Rock on Friday June 3. Both games will be at 6pm at the Swilers Rugby Complex. This professional club has hosted The Rock on the 2 previous years in pre-season games and beat them on both occasions.

Cross Keys have just finished their season in mid-table in their league. The Swilers are the best club team in Newfoundland and will have multiple Rock players, including 3 guest players. Morgan Lovell played for Cross Keys prior to emigrating to Newfoundland. He will marry St. John’s Laura Murphy, daughter of the well known soccer executive Brian Murphy, on Friday June 3.

The Swilers squad is:

Chris Burt, Owen Parfrey, Dave Penney, Robin DeSilva, Colin Hearns, Phil Alcock, Brad Lester, Kevin Parfrey, Zac Coughlan, Justin Meyers, Neil Molloy, Adam Paul, Mike Simpson, Morgan Lovell, Tyler Wish, Geoff Warden, Jason Picco, Grant Moffett, Evan Buckley, James Fillier, Kyle McGuirk.

The Rock will be depleted by the absence of Canadian players Jebb Sinclair, Chauncey O’Toole and Ciaran Hearn at the Churchill Cup as well as Kevin Parfrey (exams), Ken Goodland, and Morgan Lovell. However they are in good fettle having beaten Canada Selects and played very well in losing to the Argentinian team Salta 16-13 this month.

In addition to the Rock players in the Swilers squad the following will also play for the Rock :Frank Walsh, Peter Densmore, Rod Snow, Jon Phelan, Toni Wodzicki, Kyle Baillie, Mike Hansom, Ralph Byers, Morgan Williams, Dean Blanks, Simon Pacey, Rob Turk. In this game there will much interest in how the back row plays, as Sinclair and O’Toole are unlikely to play in the Canadian Rugby Championships because they are likely to be selected for Canada in the Rugby World Cup.
