The Rock renews rivalry with Ontario in CRC

The Rock will play Ontario in their first home game  of the restructured Canadian Rugby Championships on Saturday Aug 20 at the Swilers Rugby Complex.

This competition now comprises 5 games in a league structure with the Champion being the league winner. The quality of the competition now makes all games important. With bonus points and few players lost to the Rugby World Cup, Ontario are well positioned to become this year’s winner. Ontario have beaten BC in BC, gaining a bonus point by scoring 4 tries, and obtained 2 bonus points when losing to the Prairies Wolf Pack. On the other hand The Rock lost to BC, gaining no bonus points, and obtained 4 points by the victory against the Wolf Pack.

The Rock have a substantially altered team from that which beat Canada Selects and narrowly lost to Salta in May. Frank Walsh, Jebb Sinclair, Chauncey O’Toole and Ciaran Hearn are in the Canadian World Cup squad, due to depart for Australia this week, and the squad has been decimated by injury. Gone for the season are Peter Densmore (biceps tendon surgery) and Sean O’Leary (fracture radius), and very doubtful for this weekend are Rod Snow (knee), Tyler Wish (shoulder), Patrick Parfrey (hamstring), Geoff Warden(groin), Morgan Lovell (hamstring). The Rock were very unhappy about their performance in BC, but pleased that they managed to improve substantially against the Wolf Pack, particularly as they overcame the adversity of multiple injuries.

“This will be the least experienced team to represent the Rock for a decade and we will need strong fan support to help us compete against the strongest Ontario team for a long time. Their front 5 is big and strong, comprising 5 Canadian internationals, who have demolished BC and the Wolf Pack in the scrums. There is an intense rivalry between the Rock and Ontario, so it will be an opportunity for our young bucks to perform in a big game” commented co-coach Pat Parfrey
