Newfoundland Rugby players selected for National teams.

May 5, 2011 -  Robert Wilson, the speedy Rock wing, has been invited to play for Canada Sevens for the first time, and will feature in the Edinburgh Seven-a-Side Tournament May 27-29. He will accompany the Canadian Sevens stalwart Ciaran Hearn who was a star at the World Championships in Hong Kong recently. Ciaran will also play in the London Sevens May 20-22, and consequently will not be available for the Argentina Canada Provincial Challenge game between The Rock and Salta Province on Thursday May 19 in St John’s.

“I am disappointed Ciaran is not available for the Salta game as this is perhaps the biggest game we have played, as it identifies the inaugural winner of the Amerigo Vespucci Trophy, the first provincial competition between teams from both American continents. However Rob will be available. As one of Rugby Canada’s 4 High Performance Centres, conflicts between Province and Country must be resolved in favour of the country,” commented Pat Parfrey, Director of The Rock Rugby Program.

Three u20 players have been selected to play in the World Rugby Trophy competition in Georgia May 22-June 6, where Canada juniors will play against Georgia, Japan and Zimbabwe, prior to a final play-off game. These players include Patrick Parfrey (outhalf/centre), Bob Rogers (prop) and Jordan Power (hooker). They are now in BC for an 18 day camp in preparation for the tournament.

“This is the first time we have had more than one player from Newfoundland play for Canada u20 in international tournaments and reflects the recent success of our team,” said Rock coach Simon Blanks.

Matthew Whittle, the young Baymen flanker, has just returned from England, where he played for Canada at u17 level.
